Dear Maria

Dear Maria,

Although I may look like the little sister – and sometimes act like the little sister – this is what I wish I would have known when graduated.

  1. Find your Passions and your Strengths and whenever things go wrong, fall into what you love. I can always find solace in my running shoes, good music, playing AFL, or behind my camera.“Life is sometimes hard. Things go wrong, in life and in love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do.Make good art.

I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician? Make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by mutated boa constrictor? Make good art. IRS on your trail? Make good art. Cat exploded? Make good art. Somebody on the Internet thinks what you do is stupid or evil or it’s all been done before? Make good art. Probably things will work out somehow, and eventually time will take the sting away, but that doesn’t matter. Do what only you do best. Make good art.” – (in reference to art as a passion)

  2. Find your People. I am talking about your rock solid cheerleaders that will go out of their way to see you – make sure you are okay – and cheer you on no matter what. Find people with common interests. Find people smarter then you. Find people that are motivated and love to adventure. Life is hard and you will need advice, and these people are going to be invaluable to your life.
  3. Find Knowledge. Learn something everyday – it sounds like a huge cliche and something that dad would ask you – but it is true. With an always expanding mind you will find a purpose in each day. It could be something as simple as finding out that pineapples do not grow on trees, or it could be something as complex as learning what a small fold in your brain does when you see a face. Do not settle into simply falling into a daily routine without learning!
  4. Find your Happiness. If you only learn one thing in life remember that the entire point is to be happy. Surround yourself with happiness; do things that make you happy, be with happy people, and no matter how terrible a day you have had find at least one thing that makes you smile.

I know you are going to do great things and while your eyes are rolling back into your head, mine are filling with happy tears (Oh no I am turning into mom!). You are a superstar and if you ever need to be reminded you have two brothers that will poke you in the ribs and one sister that will forever be ‘borrowing’ your clothes.

Love,

Haley IMG_3430
